backronym
Definition - A word that was initially not an acronym that has had an acronymic interpretation contrived for it.

Example -

(1) Wiki (What I Know Is)
(2) posh (Port Out Starboard Home)
(3) SOS (Save Our Souls)

Etymology -
The term was probably coined by combining the words back or backward with acronym.

Quotation -
"In a backronym, an expansion is invented to treat an existing word as an acronym. An example is Yahoo!, now said to stand for Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle, although the founders claim they just liked the word."

Feedback

1. While this ("an expansion is invented to treat an existing word as an acronym") is one rationale for backronyms, in other cases, people are grasping at straws for an etymology.
