| Definition -
(Aka exocentric compound)
A headless compound that refers to someone by what he has or does rather than by what he is, e.g. flatfoot, old money, bluestocking, and foureyes.
Etymology - The term — which was first used by Sanskrit grammarians — derives from the Sanskrit bahuvrīhi, which means "much rice." Note that the word bahuvribi is itself a bahuvribi because it is a compound (of bahu, much + vrihi, rice) that denotes a rich man, i.e. a person who has "much rice."
