| coordination |
| Definition:
The process of connecting grammatical units of equal status, such as coordinate clauses. They are usually connected by a coordinating conjunction (e.g., and or but). Note: There are three types of coordination: (1) syndetic coordination (e.g., The man and his dog — the coordinating conjunction separates two units of equal status) (2) asyndetic coordination (e.g., I came, I ate, I left — the coordinating conjunction is missing but implied) (3) polysyndetic coordination (e.g., I came and I ate and I left — the coordinating conjunction is inserted between each pair of units for its stylistic effect) |
