demonstrative root

Definition: An etymological root that seems to solely have a demonstrative function, i.e., of pointing out or indicating a near or remote object.
Example: The th in the and there.
Oxford English Dictionary: The term's first citation is from 1865:
"The demonstrative roots, a small class of independent radicals."
