exonym
Definition:
(1) A place name that is used by outsiders, but not by the inhabitants of that place.
(2) A group name that is used by outsiders, but not by the members of the group.
Note: The name that either the inhabitants of the place or the members of the group use to identify themselves is called an endonym.
Example: Deutschland is an endonym because it is what the inhabitants of the place call the country; whereas Germany is the English speaker's exonym for the same place.
Etymology: The word derives from the Greek exo, outside, and onoma, name.
