Definition - The more specific term in the semantic relationship between a specific and a more general term.

Notes:
1. The more general term is called a hyperonym.

Example -
Scarlet, vermilion, and crimson are hyponyms of red, which is their hyperonym. In turn, red is a hyponym of colour.

Etymology -
The word derives from the Greek hypo, under + onoma, name.
