indirect object
Definition - The word that is being affected by a verb's action, but which is not the primary word being acted upon.

Example -
In the sentence I gave him a dog, the noun dog is the primary word that the verb gave is acting upon, thus it is a direct object; whereas the pronoun him represents something that is being indirectly affected by the action, thus it is an indirect object.

Oxford English Dictionary -
The phrase's first citation is from 1879: "The indirect object is the person (or thing) affected by the occurrence of an action … although not directly or primarily acted on."
(Roby Lat. Gram. II. 54)
