Wallis, John

(1616 - 1703)
Wallis was an English mathematician and part-time grammarian who, in addition to participating in the development of calculus and introducing the infinity symbol (∞), wrote one of the first influential treatises on English grammar, the Grammatica Linguae Anglicanae (1653), wherein he concocted a set of rules for using shall and will.
