(1887-1949) The American linguist who was the major figure in the development of American structural linguistics during the 1930s and 1940s. His linguistics strongly emphasized data collection and empirical analysis. His influence has declined since the 1950s, being superseded by the much less empirical — effectively untestable — theories proposed by Noam Chomsky.
