lexical root
Definition - The primary semantic unit of a word, i.e. the semantic unit that can't be broken into smaller parts.

Notes:
1. As oppose to an inflectional root, which is a word without its inflectional endings — but which, perhaps, could be broken further into lexical roots.

Example -
The lexical root of batters is bat, but the inflectional root is batter.
