lexicology
Definition - The area of linguistics that studies the form, history, and meaning of words, e.g. it studies the whole lexicon to analyze the nature and meaning of words and word groups, as well as the semantic relations between them.

Notes:
1. In constrast to lexicography, which is the writing or compiling of dictionaries.

Etymology -
The word ultimately derives from the Greek lexikon, wordbook.

Oxford English Dictionary -
Its first citation is from 1828 (A definition in Webster's dictionary).
