A font in which the characters occupy the same amount of horizontal space. In contrast to variable-width fonts where some characters can occupy different amounts of horizontal space

Etymology -
The word font derives from the Middle French fonte, the feminine past participle of fondre, melt. Fonts were so called because all of the letters of a particular font were usually cast from the same batch of melted iron.
