Definition - The study of the common names — specifically, the principles of naming, especially regarding regional, social, and occupational variations.

Notes:
1. As opposed to onomastics, the study of proper names and their origins and onomatology, the science of name and term formation.

Etymology -
The word derives from the Greek onoma, name.

Its first citation is from 1931:
