phonation
Definition -
(1) The process by which the vocal folds produce sounds by vibrating. Note that this sense of the term is also known as quasi-periodic vibration voicing.
(2) Any oscillation of any part of the larynx that modifies the airstream.

Notes:
1. This along with the manner of articulation and place of articulation gives consonants their distinctive sound.

Example -
The difference between the [p] and the [b] is a difference in phonation.
