swung dash (~)
Definition - A name for the tilde when it is used by dictionaries to save space.

Example -
If let is the entry's headword, ~down appearing within the entry would mean letdown.

Etymology -
The term was probably coined by the makers of the Oxford dictionaries, because the first dictionary to use it was the first edition of The Little Oxford Dictionary (1930).

Oxford English Dictionary -
Its first citation in this sense is from 1951:
"In this edition … the swung dash has been freely employed."
