synaesthesia (medical)
Definition - A brain disorder (condition?) where senses are mixed up. For example, you see sounds and hear colors.

Etymology -
The word derives from the Greek syn, together + aisthe, to feel.

Oxford English Dictionary -
Its first citation is from 1891:
"Synæsthesia, synesthesia, the production of a sensation located in one place when another place is stimulated."

1. As a synaesthete, I have to object to you calling synaesthesia a disorder. It's quite common (I've read as common as 1 in 20)- and really is just another way of experiencing the world. The most common is having coloured letters and numbers. Check out Sean Day's site the Synaesthesia list.
