Definition: The study of place names.
Note: It is also called toponomastics.
Etymology: The word derives from the Greek topos, place + onoma, name.
Oxford English Dictionary: Its first citation is from 1876:
"The substitution of vague descriptions of dress and arms, and a vague toponomy, for the full and definite descriptions and precise toponomy of the primitive poems."
