transformation
Definition - A Chomskyan term for operations that convert a deep-structure syntactic item into its surface structure version.

For example, the sentences Pat loves Chris and Chris is loved by Pat mean roughly the same thing. Chomsky accounts for this similarity by postulating that these two sentences are derived by transformations applied to a common deep-structure item.

Notes:
1. The concept of linguistic transformation was conceived of and the term coined by Zellig Harris.
